On the 1st of November 1950, Pope Pius XII made an infallible ex-cathedra statement in the Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus Dei defining the dogma of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The dogma is the first ex-cathedra infallible statement issued since the First Vatican Council's official ruling on papal infallibility. Today, the Solemn Feast of the Assumption is celebrated by the Universal Church every 15th of August.

One with the Church in Her commemoration of the major feast day, the Conventual Franciscan Friars of the Philippine Custody of The Immaculate Conception and Blessed Bonaventure of Potenza celebrated the Holy Eucharist in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Holy Mass was presided by Fra. Emmanuel Giva, OFMConv., the Provincial Custos, and concelebrated by his fellow friar priests. During the mass, eight (8) Conventual Franciscan Friars renewed their religious vows. The friars who renewed their vows were Fra Matthias Montero, Fra Gregory Salva, Fra Martin Gabito, Fra Isidore Ayon-ayon, Fra Augustine Asilo, Fra Jude Sandig, Fra Yosef Amedo, and Fra Giuseppe Castrojas.

In his homily, Fra. Emmanuel shared that “the way up is to go down.” Taking inspiration from the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Fra Emmanuel pointed out that heaven is also possible for us, and that allowing ourselves to go down in prayer is a big part of that, for, in going down, we humble ourselves and become obedient to the will of the Father.

Having renewed their vows, the friars pleaded to God that, through His grace, with the help of The Blessed Virgin Mary assumed to heaven and their brothers, they may be able to faithfully fulfill what they have promised. Trusting in God’s mercy, they, too, hope to be in heaven at the end of their earthly life.
