Today, we celebrate the solemnity of the Ascension of Our Lord Jesus into heaven, body and soul. The triumphant return of Jesus into the home of the Father was welcomed by the Angels with jubilation. He returned to heaven bringing with him the resurrected body, making his home, our home. In bringing the human body into heaven, He tells us that we have a new home in heaven because He opened heaven for us. This should be more our feast than just the feast in heaven. God in his goodness shared heaven to us as his sons and daughters. In Jesus, we become heirs into the kingdom of God.
The first reading talks about the restoration of the kingdom of Israel. Jesus came to restore not the structure but the core. He became the foundation itself and asked us to be part of that kingdom which is the kingdom of God.
Jesus returned to heaven bringing with him the resurrected body, making his home, our home.
In the second reading, St. Paul tells us that the Father gave Christ this task of making everything one with Him who is one with the Father.
The Gospel confirms the message of the second reading when Jesus said: “ All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me.” Jesus shares the mission and authority to church through the eleven disciples. He commanded them: “Go and make disciples to all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
We continue this mission given to the Church and we try to be faithful even amidst our weakness.
Brothers and sisters let us heed to the calling of Christ!
