Be Steadfast in Faith, Look Forward with Hope, and Carry the Love as We Live Our Lives

32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

As we near the end of the liturgical year and after following Jesus, the “Word” into it, we should be by now grounded on our relationship with Him. The Gospel this Sunday, ask us to be steadfast in faith, look forward with hope, and carry in our hearts the love as we battle in this world.

The story of the seven brothers in the book of Maccabees encourages us to be firm and faithful amidst difficulties and persecutions. They embraced death rather than betraying God’s law.

The Sadducees, not believing the resurrection, tries to justify their unbelief and ridicule those who believe in it. They were asking Jesus, if seven brothers marry one after the other the same woman, when they resurrect, to whom does she belong?

Our marriage (as Church) to God makes us children of our Father in heaven.

Jesus, seeing that they missed the point, explains to them that human marriage is just a means for us to discover a higher and more important marriage, that is our marriage (as Church) to God, making us children of our Father in heaven.

The Church helps us to go deeper into our lives, as Jesus commanded the disciples “Duc in Altum” (Go into the deep).

Let us not be satisfied with the superficiality of life. In the Holy sacrifice of the Mass, let us allow ourselves to be led by the Spirit into a deeper understanding of what we celebrate.
