Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of the coming of the Holy Spirit on Mary and on the Apostles. This event narrated in the Acts of the Apostles brings us to another two great events in the Bible: The Creation of Man in the book of Genesis and at the Annunciation of the coming of our Lord to Mary.
When God created Adam, he filled him with the Holy Spirit, He breathed into his nostrils and life was given him. The Holy Spirit is also seen in the book of Genesis as hovering over the Earth, sustaining life with the love that proceeds from the Father and the Son.
When the Angel Gabriel announced to Mary the coming of the Messiah, the Holy Spirit hovered over her and she was filled by the Holy Spirit. She became the Mother of Life because Jesus, the Son of God, the source of life was born through her.
The Holy Spirit brings to each heart the joy of the Gospel – the same joy that sustained Mary in her sufferings and sorrow.
On this day, the Solemnity of the Pentecost, we celebrate the coming of the same Holy Spirit that again hovered over her and over the Apostles (the Church) who became children of Mary at the foot of the Cross. Today, we see Mary and her children (members of the Church) being filled by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit renews and sustains the Church with love that proceeds from God. The Holy Spirit brings to each heart the joy of the Gospel – the same joy that sustained Mary in her sufferings and sorrow.
Let us run to Mary our mother to experience and receive the completeness of joy through the Holy Spirit, for she is the spouse and the purest temple of the Holy Spirit. With a wide-open heart, let us welcome the coming of the Holy Spirit and allow Him to hover over us so that we may be impregnated by His presence. Let us join our hearts with the Holy Spirit who continues to hover over the world to renew the face of the earth.
