Jesus Brings Us the Eternal Flame of Love: A Fire That Never Consumes but Purifies

20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today, Jesus tells us that he came to set fire on the earth. He brings with him the fire of love that will never be extinguished. The Holy Spirit is a fire that purifies us, that makes us precious. Like gold that is purified by fire, so our soul is purified by the love of God.

God, in cleansing us with our impurities, just like the cleansing of the Temple, helps us to see clearly the truth.

Like gold that is purified by fire, so our soul is purified by the love of God.

And as the cleansing of the temple by Jesus caused division, our purification will make us a sign of contradiction in the world. We will be a counterflow of the current of the world. The world's current is a current that leads to destruction, emptiness and loneliness; the current we are asked to take leads us to a deeper understanding of the fullness of life in God – one that leads us to building, fullness and joy!

Let us go to Jesus, our way, our truth, and our life. And let us allow the Holy Spirit to set ablaze the fire of His love in our hearts.
